Name: Amanda Christensen
Established: 1885
Founder: -
Country: Sweden
In 1885, the former teacher and necktie seamstress Amanda Christensen started her own company, Amanda Christensen AB, at the tender age of 21. Amanda skilfully built up her company and strengthened it until it had acquired a leading position among Europe’s tie makers. Amanda’s business concept lives on: “not to sell a price but rather a quality”. And that perhaps explains why Amanda Christensen AB has been a purveyor to the Royal Court since 1949.

Name: Armani
Established: 1981
Founder: Giorgio Armani
Country: Italy
Giorgio Armani was born in 1934 in Piacenza, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. He studied natural sciences but gave it up to study photography before being called to military duty in 1957. He began his career in the fashion business as a salesperson in a department store in the 1960s and he continued to work there until 1970. During this time, Armani became a freelance designer and was even an assistant at Cerruti.
In 1972, Armani - with his good friend and business partner Sergio Galeotti - opened a shop. To raise the capital, Armani sold his Volkswagen. A couple of years later, the company Georgio Armani S.P.A was founded and he launched a “prêt à porter” collection for both men and women. In 1981, he presented the sportier and younger collection of Emporio Armani and, somewhat later than that, Armani A/X.
It was when a young Richard Gere starred in the film “American Gigolo” with an entire wardrobe filled with well-tailored clothing from Armani did Giorgio Armani become known to the masses. Sergio Galeotti died in 1985, so Georgio Armani has solely steered the company for nearly the last 25 years. The Italian fashion house represents a well-tailored, free and minimalist kind of fashion. With his sense for fashion, Georgio Armani has helped pave the way for other designers such as Calvin Klein, Donna Karan and Jil Sander.
